Questions

Sales tax, briefly.

Which province’s rate do I charge?

Generally the province where the work is done. For work on a customer’s home or property, that’s the province the property is in — so a crew based in Ottawa working in Gatineau charges GST and QST, not HST.

Do I have to charge GST or HST?

Once your taxable sales go over $30,000 in a calendar quarter, or over four consecutive quarters, you are no longer a small supplier and have to register and charge it. Under that, registering is your choice. The CRA has the details.

What about PST in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba?

Whether provincial sales tax applies depends on the service and the province. Tick it in the calculator only if your service is taxable under it — check with the province or your accountant if you’re not sure.

How does CrewDocket handle tax?

Pick where you work once and every quote and invoice adds the right tax. At filing time, Profit shows the tax you charged, the tax you paid on expenses, and a CSV for your accountant.
